Northeastern University Ethnographic Interview on a Chicagoan Project

In this assignment, you are asked to conduct and write about an interview with a Chicagoan about their life history.

This assignment has two parts:

1. Using your Interview Script (see handouts), talk to this Chicagoan about how they identify with the local culture, history, or social life.

  • Ask them thematic questions about the topics you want to cover in the interview encounter.
  • Use probing questions to follow up on any response that might be vague or unclear.

2. Then, through a formal paper, write about this Chicagoan’s life history in your own words.

  • Put your interviewee’s point of view in dialogue, or perhaps in tension, with your own.
  • You will not simply be reporting an interview.
  • Rather you will want to integrate parts of the other person’s perspective into your ethnographic analysis.
  • For example, what was their understanding or experiencing of growing up?
  • What is it similar or different from yours?

Paper Requirements

Formatting should include:

  • 5 pages
  • double-spaced
  • 1 inch margins
  • 12 point font
  • page numbers

Format and paper organization is open.

The goal is to tell me (the reader) about this individual person’s life story and how it demonstrates or relates to their identity as a Chicagoan.

  • What did they focus on the most in your interview?
  • What information did they share, what didn’t they share with you?
  • How do you know this person? Why did you recruit them for this assignment?
  • What aspects of Chicago culture do they relate to or identify with?

Must include a combination of the following kinds of information:

  • Direct quotation
  • Indirect quotation
  • Objective description
  • Subjective interpretation

Have direct quotes of the person interviewing for this assignment. The rest should be in your own words. Majority of the paper must be subjective interpretation either your words or the person you’re interviewing.

GOAL is to illustrate how your Chicagoan’s identity relates to different Chicago sub cultures and different Chicago cultural activities.
