New York University W6 Smoking a Public Health Issue Discussion

Respond to the following discussion:

A public health issue that could be addressed with a policy change

Smoking is a public health issue that affects millions of people worldwide per year. However, in underserved communities, the effect of smoking is more prevalent and prominent. Smoking is responsible for more than 7 million deaths per year globally, and approximately more than 480,000 deaths per year in the U.S. Data has shown that smoking results in increased comorbidities and mortality rates and is responsible for more than 16 million Americans living with smoking-induced related diseases (Center For Disease Control and Prevention, 2021). Furthermore, the cessation of smoking is a public health issue that could be addressed with a policy change, such as implementing programs that provide support in nicotine withdrawal for smokers.

Importance of Stakeholders

Potential stakeholders that can address this public health issue includes Therapist, Counselors, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration organization, the local & state health departments, and clinics. Furthermore, I would solicit input and gather feedback by forming partnerships with nicotine addicts who have recovered so that they can share their experiences with those who are going through the withdrawal process. Also, I would use surveys to gather information on what methods are effective and what activities or suggestions the smokers would like.

Moreover, It is important to engage with stakeholders in the policy process because a collaborative partnership will be needed to brainstorm, implement solutions, and provide aid to smokers during the withdrawal period. Lastly, the roles and responsibilities that these stakeholders could have in the policy process are providing resources and tools for support and providing an open space that addresses the psychological and nicotine craving issues.
