- Post at least one question/point in response to Lecture 1.
I could not view the lecture and tried to find it on internet with no luck. It says error processing.
- Post the most important question you have about any works you have read in this unit.
Thanksgiving is a very special time for my family and I. I knew the
history of Thanksgiving and how it become about but not much more than
that. I found it interesting on how Bradford first starting using the
word Pilgrim and how it carried on. I guess my question is, what made
him think to use this name, and why did he take it from the Geneva
Bible?
- What
do Crevecoeur’s ideas about the immigration from Europe to America
contribute to your understanding of American history and culture,
particularly “the American dream”?
The “American Dream” to me is the opportunity and right to be able to
persue my goals and dreams. I will be able to strive and contribute to
society and get rewarded for all of my hard work. This would allow me
to raise a family on my own land, food and clothing would never be an
issue. We would prosper together as a family.
Crevecoeur’s ideas were based on this as well. This is why we have
become to know the American Dream as this. He described the
opportunities in America, the riches that could be made, and peoples
freedoms. This is the base for what I stated above, it is just expanded
upon. His thoughts are still part of the reason people strive to live
in America.
- What do you think of Irving’s “Rip Van Winkle” as a story (a “sit-com”) about the relations between American men and women?
There
are many sit-com’s where the women are in charge and control the men.
This could easily be one of them, even though it was written so long
ago. Rip Van Winkle was scared to be around his wife, and was
threatened by his wife. In reality this was not her fault, but his own
doing. He was lazy at home and she saw him constantly helping others,
but couldn’t even help on his own farm. His children learned from this
idea as well. He left and was relieved that she was gone when he
returned. The sleeping part of it could actually by that he was not
asleep, just his mind was. Could it be that he had just turned off his
mind and just his body was there? Maybe he really hadn’t left
physically, just mentally because he could not handle what was going on
in his life. One saying that comes to mind is “I am not deaf, I just
listen to what I want to hear.”

Post the most important question you have about any works you have read in this unit.
My
question is why is William Bradford’s account of “the first
thanksgiving” different in his manuscript then what was originally
portrayed? The fact that originally it was told there were puritans and
Native Americans sharing in the meal with the presence of some ninety
Native Americans but in the manuscript, there is no mention of the
Natives?
What
do Crevecoeur’s ideas about the immigration from Europe to America
contribute to your understanding of American history and culture,
particularly “the American dream”?
The
American dream is the belief that anyone, regardless of where they were
born or what class they were born into, can attain their own version of
success in a society in which upward mobility is possible for everyone.
The American dream is believed to be achieved through sacrifice,
risk-taking, and hard work, rather than by chance.
With
that I would say that his ideas have contributed moderately to my
understanding of American History and what immigration meant to many of
those that chose to come to American and “rebrand” themselves away from
their pasts.
What do you think of Irving’s “Rip Van Winkle” as a story (a “sit-com”) about the relations between American men and women?
Rip
Van Winkle has the desire to avoid work, escape authority, and sleep
through the major decisions of one’s life being applicable to both men
and women, in Irving’s story this “universal” desire is made
specifically male. Work, authority, and decision-making are symbolized
by Dame Van Winkle, and the longing for flight is defined against her.
She is what one must escape. He definitely portrays in his writings that
he will do whatever is needed to avoid major responsibilities as that
is what his wife is there for but he shows no regard as to how his
absences effect that relationship.
Response Essay
Differences Between Edwards and Franklin
Write a three-paragraph essay, one to
two pages, in which you respond to what you perceive to be the most
significant differences between Edwards’ “Personal Narrative” and
Franklin’s Autobiography. Do these two works taken together shape a
different American culture than would either one taken by itself?
Please submit assignment by Sunday at 11:59 p.m. EST
- If an essay is below standard (below a “C”) in terms of content,
style, and punctuation, you will have to rewrite it to receive a grade,
so be sure not to submit first drafts. - Acceptable essays will graded “B” if they meet the demands of the
assignment, “A” if they both meet the demands of the assignment and
teach me something, and “C” if they are minimally satisfactory. - You may rewrite C- and B-level essays (except for the final
essay), but if your essays progress in quality, you will earn a final
grade based on improvement rather than an average of all assignments (of
course, if you work is “upand-down,” your final grade will be more of
an average grade).
