**My public health campaign will be on Conflict Minerals in DRC)
• sexual violence towards women and girls in the Democratic Republic of
the Congo conflict protect and empower them through the help of
grassroots establishments and international organizations.
• Congolese miners have lost their jobs, with some joining armed groups
as a way to earn a quick buck in the absence of alternative employment
opportunities. At the same time, the region’s black market in minerals
has been strengthened, playing into the hands of the very mafia and
rebel networks the campaign was attempting to starve of mineral revenue
in the first place.
• By creating artisanal mining in the DRC it will marginalizes the
sector and further perpetuates poverty.
• Supporters should work with the Congolese government to reform the DRC
Mining Code to formalize artisanal mining and enable artisanal miners
to form cooperative societies and customary mining groups This would
also allow for greater legal investment in artisanal mining and promote
healthier behavior.
