Recent class discussion and readings have focused on understanding aspects of our experience that can directly and indirectly affect personal development, such as procrastination, sensitivity, flow, and anxiety. We have also discussed strategies for addressing these issues, and in our discussion of emotional intelligence we noted the importance of self-awareness and self-regulation when it comes to our experience of emotions. In this project, you will build on the material covered and additional research to explore at a specific situation you have experienced and develop a plan of action of how you might address it in the future (Part 1). Next, you will think about a situation affecting someone you know well and wish to offer support to (Part 2).
Part 1 – Self-focus (10 points, up to 2 pages, double spaced). Choose a time when you experienced something that involves one of the topics discussed in class and the readings since 9/30 (e.g., procrastination, flow, sensitivity, anxiety, negative or positive emotions). Then:
1) In 1 – 2 paragraphs, describe the situation, noting the specific aspects of the situation that were most important to you and also discuss how the situation relates to the topic discussed in class.
2) Do some additional research on the topic, finding at least two additional resources (be sure to list your resources at the end of your paper). Summarize in 1 -3 paragraphs what you learned from these resources.
3) Using what you learned in class and in the readings, and your additional research, describe in 1 – 4 paragraphs how you might handle the situation differently now. Be sure to include specific strategies you might use, and why you think they might be helpful.
Part 2 – Other focus (10 points, up to 2 pages, double spaced). Choose another situation, this time one that both involves a DIFFERENT topic from the one you chose in Part 1 (but is still one of the topics we discussed in class- see list above) and that happened to friend or a loved one. You may wish to choose a situation that left you somewhat perplexed.
1) In 1 – 2 paragraphs, describe the situation, noting the specific aspects of the situation that were most important to your friend/loved one and also discuss how the situation relates to the topic discussed in class.
2) Do some additional research on this NEW topic, finding at least two additional resources (be sure to list your resources at the end of your paper). Summarize in 1 -4 paragraphs what you learned from these new resources.
3) Using what you learned in class and in the readings, and your additional research, describe in 1 – 4 paragraphs how might now see your friend/loved one’s situation differently. Do you think any of the strategies discussed in class, the readings, and your research on this new topic would help in this kind of situation, and discuss why or why not?
