• The Open Systems Interconnection model characterizes and standardizes the communication function of a computing system (Fennelly, 2017). The OSI model has 7 layers. Information is transmitted from layer 7 to layer 1 in an encapsulated form to protect and standardize the data packets. The receiving system gets the information from layer 1 to layer 7 in a decapsulated form. Each layer performs a specific function for the overall process. The OSI model layers are below:
  • 7 – Application
  • 6 – Presentation
  • 5 – Session
  • 4 – Transport
  • 3 – Network
  • 2 – Data Link
  • 1 – Physical

• Network infrastructure devices help facilitate the movement of data along in a computer network (Fennelly, 2017). These components of the network transport communications needed for data, applications, services, and multi-media. The following devices are considered to be network infrastructure devices:
  • Routers
  • Firewalls
  • Switches
  • Servers
  • Hubs
  • Intrusion Detection Systems

  Assignment: Briefly, discuss how the mentioned network infrastructure devices are used to transport communications in a network.
