Instructions 1. Select a Bioethics topic from the following choices: a. Genome Databases- Where should the medical community draw the line?

2 g. More research paper topic choices are posted in the Blackboard Sign Up Discussion.
i. Have another issue in mind, or a narrower subtopic related to one of the above choices? IMPORTANT: Obtain instructor approval before you begin your research and writing phases, or the final research paper will receive a zero grade.
2. Research this topic.
a. You must find out the FACTS, first. Define the topic, describe the extent of the topic, and maybe you will need to narrow the topic to only the United States, should a discussion of current laws become a problem in doing your research. ALSO: describe any specific technology used in this topic. Example. If you are researching the pros and cons of cloning, explain not only WHAT cloning is, but HOW it is accomplished.
b. Next, you MUST research both sides of the issue, both pros and cons. Who is in favor of the technology and/or practice continuing or even advancing further? Why do they favor this? How does it benefit mankind? Who is opposed to the practice and why? How do they think it is hurting mankind? I. Introduction a. Why you chose this bioethical topic. b. Why the topic is relevant and important to discuss
c. What current news item about your topic that you found interesting and why.
d. Underline the thesis statement of the final research paper. NCC: Writing a thesis statement.
3 II. Background Information
a. Full description of the topic: a definition of what the process is, any laws governing the process, etc.
b. Include how genetics and biology are involved in your research paper topic for your non-scientist audience (e.g., community, family) to understand: What, where, when, or how?
c. Summarize in your own words using the relevant scientific terms. Define abbreviations and acronyms, if used. Use direct quotes enclosed in quotation marks or block quotes very sparingly. Important: Be sure to cite sources of your direct quotes and paraphrased facts in the body of the paper with in-text parenthetical citations in APA format, such as (Last name, year of publication or posting). Examples: (CDC, 2021), (Franklin and Washington, 2020), (“Genetically modified cows,” n.d.): APA In-Text Format Options (Last name of the author/organization, year of publication) – No first name or academic degree listed; or (Last name of the author/ organization, n.d.) – use “n.d.” if no year of publication is provided; or (First 3 words of the “Article title,” year of publication) if there is no author or organization provided.

Describe the opposing viewpoints regarding the bioethical controversy – potential issues related to health, medical care, technology, research, laws, policies, environmental impact, or society.
Summarize and cite the different viewpoints using in-text parenthetical citations. Present both sides of the issue: a. Who is in favor of the technology and/or practice continuing or even advancing further?
Why do they favor this? How does it benefit mankind? b. Who is opposed to the practice and why?
How do they think it is hurting mankind? 4 IV. My Personal Opinion Give your opinion of the topic: a. Do you think the process should continue? If so, why? If not, why not?
