In about 2 or 3 paragraphs for each question (1 and 2) answer the following:
Question 1: The death of Elijah Muhammad was a major turning point for the NOI. The titles “Imam” and “Minister” tell much of this story. What were the real points of divergence in their approaches? What role did their respective relationships with orthodox, Sunni Islam play in this? What role did Black Religion play?
–
Question 2:The NOI had its own conception of “orthodoxy.” A number of movements challenged and or deviated from this, developing their own doctrinal commitments, leadership and institutional structures. How were these movements able to sustain themselves in the face of the NOI? How accurate is it, in fact, to depict them as NOI spin-offs? What was their appeal?
