CLASSMATE RESPONSE:
The story, “The Knife Longs for the Ruby” and the film, “Nurse.Fighter.Boy” share a theme in that they both possess the idea that family can be created merely through relationships. It supports that parenthood can be shaped without blood connection. Tonio and Father Jaime’s relationship is strong, as Jaime has raised Tonio as his own since being a newborn. They care for each other pretty equally in the time period the story is told, and Tonio fears leaving Jaime when Jaime encourages him to continue his life with a woman of interest. This is because of his caring demeanor, as he doesn’t wish to ever leave Jaime alone. Regardless of their slave vs master dynamic, these two arguably parent each other. As for the film, Jude and Silence take each other as Jude carries a disease and is sick. They find each other in the hospital when Silence comes in due to an injury from fighting. They are attracted to each other in that of tending and caring for one another. The theme ends well in both, and although Tonio kills himself to be with his late Father, it’s the principle in the why he does so. The film shows Silence as one who is so very hesitant in trusting, and so how he does Jude is loving in his own way. The lesson that can be absorbed from this short story and film is similar to cherishing what you have in the moment and holding it dearly close. To take nothing for granted and always be grateful for what you have in front of you.
