PART A
QUESTIONS:
What is the conflict in the short story?
What is unusual about the father / son pairing between Father Jaime and Tonio? Who is ultimately the parent?
PART B: RESPONSES FROM TWO DIFFERENT CLASSMATES
1) In my opinion the primary conflict in the short story “The knife longs for the ruby” is loneliness. Tonio harbors feelings of discontent for father Jaime because he sees him for what he truly is, a sad, lonely old man that lost his soul when his wife passed away many years ago. Father Jaimie feels completely empty inside and no longer has the emotional capacity to love. Many times throughout the story he refers to Tonio as his son. I believe this is because he is so lonely that it brings him comfort in his mind that he still has a family that cares for him. Tonio is almost the complete opposite, he is a very artistic young man that has too much love in his heart. Tonio’s problem is that he has no one to share his overwhelming love with so he lets it out through his art. In the end the two are a perfect pair. Even when given his freedom and the wealth to start a life for himself, he chooses to stay with father Jaime and destroys the rubies to use as art before passing away.
2) Tonios love interest Teresa, is not a fully realized character in the story. That story fails the Bechdel test. She is only introduced in the story by Tonio admiring her and sleeping with her. When she does speak her lines are about a man she loves. She is only in the story because men are in the story. ( PLEASE SEE REFERENCE IF NEEDED )
