MUSIC 1306 LC The 19th Century Operas Chance Music & German Musikdramas Discussion

1) 19th Century romantic Italian operas draw subjects from real life stories while German Musikdramas are about fantasies, legends, etc.

Which types of stories do you prefer?

What connections do you see in the stories of 19th century opera and the stories you see on TV and in movies now?

Find and opera from the 19th century and compare it to a modern day movie or TV show.

2) Please listen to “4 min. 33 sec.” and “Water Walk” by John Cage

What are you initial reactions to both of these songs?

Do you think “chance” music should still be performed?

(Hint “4 min. 33 sec.” is much more than silence)

Should “Water Walk” be considered “music”?

Can you think of any modern examples of musician or groups that modify instruments or use unexpected items in songs?
