MUSIC 111 Los Angeles Valley College Concert Report Analytical Review

For this assignment, you will “attend” the concert below. This concert does not include an intermission. Unlike your first concert report, which consisted of many musicians offering orchestral and vocal music, this concert features only two performers presenting chamber and solo music.

Watch this performance and write a concert report. Your report should be two-three pages (typed, 12-point font, double-spaced, one-inch margins; or approximately 500-750 words) in which you describe your experiences listening to and watching the concert.

These performances took place in the Laeiszhalle, home to the Hamburger Symphoniker and the Philharmoniker Hamburg, one of the great concert halls in the world. Since this performance took place in June 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, you will have no audience..

Share your impressions of the pieces and the performance. You may focus on whatever aspect of the music you wish (performers, melodies, harmonies, rhythms, textures, etc.), but be as specific as possible in your descriptions. Pay attention to the environment of the concert itself: the empty hall (for the pandemic performances), the silence before and after each piece, and the way the musicians interact with each other. Did the remote experience of watching the concert from home enhance or detract from your enjoyment of the music? How does this concert of chamber and solo music differ in experience from the orchestral concert you “attended” earlier this semester?

To receive full credit, your concert report should address the prompt above and establish a connection between what you hear and what you have learned from class. Essays that simply list the pieces and mechanically describe the performances without providing any further insight will not receive high scores.

Writing style and proper grammar both count, as does a “clean” paper (i.e., free of typos and errors). Make sure that you proofread your concert report carefully before turning it in.
