Music and composers of the Baroque period have, indeed, created the foundation for what we recognize as the basis of modern day music theory, fundamentals and practice. Today’s contemporary pieces and composers continue to draw upon these influences in all styles and genres, from orchestral and instrumental music to vocal music.
Compare two pieces of music within the same style and genre that feature Baroque qualities: one selection must be a contemporary piece (composed between 1960-present) and the other selection must be a traditional, Baroque period piece (composed between 1600-1750), specifically, from our textbook (Part III: Chapters 12-15).
What Baroque qualities can be identified in each piece? What similarities and/or differences do you hear within the form, melody, harmony, rhythm, lyrics, etc. of each piece? What developments within the style and genre have been made? Has the style and genre stayed true to its Baroque period roots or has it expanded beyond them?
You MUST provide and/or cite any sources that you used to conduct your research.
