Thesis statement: In this paper, I argue that Debussy, through his work titled “Reflets dans l’eau” (Reflections in the water) from book one of Images, pioneered a new form of music, which he called “symbolic” music rather than “impressionism” because it had definite musical features and techniques that departed from previous musical forms in that it aimed to create a different musical image dependent rather than just creating mood, atmosphere, and a detailed tone picture.
