Listen to the two song below on Spotify:
“Under the Table” by Fiona Apple
“Alright” by Kendrick Lamar
I suggest you listen on good speakers or good headphones. Do not just use your phone’s speakers, because you will miss many of the elements.
Pick one of the songs and write a textural analysis, describing the texture at any moment of the song. Include:
What is the dominant texture at any moment (monophonic, homophonic, chordal, counterpoint, etc).
What instruments and voices can you hear and what role do they play (primary melody, rhythmic support, harmony, etc). Be specific and use time code (minutes:seconds) to describe the texture as the song unfolds.
Use the analyses of David Bowie and Mozart that I posted to Blackboard as a model and a guide.
When you do the textural analyses, try and avoid using the term “polyphony” or “polyphonic”. As I explain in the lecture, this term is very broad, and simply means many different instruments or voices. Instead, try to narrow in on what kind of polyphony: homophony, harmony, counterpoint, heterophony?
I’ve also included examples of how the professor want it to be written like.
