For the final week of class you will dedicate yourself to completing the multimodal argument. This argument will reflect your original position on your issue, but it will be designed for a different audience and context, making it a significantly different argument. The argument must be visual in some way and must make an argument on the subject of your research essay.
Here is an example to demonstrate what I mean:
Let’s imagine that my research essay argued that the mayor of Detroit should include urban gardening projects as part of his plan for revitalizing neighborhoods. My intended audience for this essay is both the mayor and city council members who are in a position to influence the planning process. My purpose in the essay is to convince these people to set aside grant money to support neighborhood-based urban gardening projects.
For my multimodal argument, I’m keeping the topic of urban gardening, but I need a different audience, which may shift my approach to the topic a bit. My new audience will be residents of southwest Detroit, especially those who are interested in gardening. For this argument, my goal is to get them to apply for the grant funds that I argued about in my argumentative research essay. My purpose with this audience will be to convince residents to apply for a grant from the Detroit City Council.
Notice how the topic and attitude toward that topic are the same in each of these arguments- promoting urban gardening. Even so, there is a shift in my focus in order to fit the different audiences.
For my proposed multimodal argument to the residents of Detroit, I need to consider what type of publication will best reach them. I can think of several things that would work for this purpose. Here are a few ideas: 1. A website explaining the need for urban garden projects, the allocated grant money, the type of projects that would work, and the application process. 2. A brochure that would be sent by mail explaining the grant application process and the types of projects that would be considered. 3. A poster that would be hung in relevant local businesses (gardening shops, hardware stores, etc.)– it would feature a large image of an urban garden with people working in it…it would pose a provocative question at the top of the poster, and then the bottom would provide information about how to get started with the application process.
There are many different approaches for the multimodal argument. Please see the list below for a number of suggestions:
