Consider the foundational aspects of this therapeutic modality, unconditional positive regard, as well as authentic and genuine presence.
In the early 1950s, a more humanitarian therapy was developed by Carl Rogers. This theory outlined a more positive environment leads to better and healthier growth, Carl believed that a patient’s condition would improve drastically in a short period of time if the therapists showed a positive attitude towards everything. Rogers rejected the deterministic nature of both psychoanalysis and behaviorism and maintained that we behave as we do because of the way we perceive our situation (McLeod, 2019). According to Rogers, “Individuals have within themselves vast resources for self-understanding and for altering their self-concepts, basic attitudes, and self-directed behavior; these resources can be tapped if a definable climate of facilitative psychological attitudes can be provided,” (Noel, 2018). If the patient feels valued then they are able to change their self-perception with will indefinitely lead to positive mental health.
What aspects of this therapy modality are appealing to you or not appealing to you?
Apathy should never be present when a patient is in a state of vulnerability. Carls’ theory made it clear that empathy should be shown consistently. Ultimately, this form of encouragement will lead to growth. It is one of the most observant aspects of his theory that must be put into practice.
Do you see any correlations between this therapy modality and the nursing care that you have provided for years?
A health care provider must always provide patients with individualized care. The nursing profession ensures that all patients are treated with respect, dignity, and compassion. We must always work with each patient to determine their specific needs. Patient-centered care is outlined by this theory and I incorporate it in nearly all of my interactions with patients.

Carl Rogers is considered one of the most influential psychologists of the 20th century. He is best known for developing the psychotherapy method called client-centered therapy, and one of the founders of humanistic psychology. His theory is based on the belief that every human being strives for and has the capacity to fulfil his or her own potential. (Cherry, 2015)
The aspect that was most appealing to me, is that the Rogerian techniques have influenced other disciplines to recognize that each person has the tendency or self-actualization for growth and change. I did not find any aspect unappealing, the unconditional positive regard, correlates with my present profession and past nursing care. The unconditional concept is developed by the humanistic psychologist and is a basic acceptance and support regardless of what the person says or done.
I am currently working on the Acute Addiction medicine, caring for client with addiction, requires a humanistic approach. Addiction is a disease, and each person has the capacity grow and change, but in their own way and time. This approach allows me to focus on the client’s need rather than blaming their behavior, past experiences or viewing them as frequent flyers. Carl Rogers theory allows the client the have a positive experience, without the provider being judgmental. The focus is centered on the client, with a therapeutic and humanistic approach. This approach allows the client to feel comfortable during the intake process, as they learn about detoxification and the criteria for admission.

1) Hi –
Good post. I agree with your comment, “His theory is based on the belief that every human being strives for and has the capacity to fulfil his or her own potential. (Cherry, 2015).”
According to McLeod (2014), Carl Rogers’ model of therapy is very effective in helping people improve their self-concept. It can also help people see themselves in a more realistic light. Rogers points out human beings constantly react to the stimuli that they encounter in their reality. This constant change requires each individual to develop their concept of themselves based on the feedback they get from their environment. He believed that personality could be explained by the importance of prophesies and self-fulfilling tendencies (McLeod, 2014).
Rogers’ unconditional approach is a basic acceptance, and like your addiction program, support can be given regardless of how someone behaves. Human beings constantly react to the stimuli that they encounter in their reality. This constant change requires each individual to develop their concept of themselves based on the feedback they get from their environment (McLeod, 2014).
Also, you mentioned, “Carl Rogers’ theory allows a client to have a positive experience without being judged;” however, while this method works in most cases, it is important to keep a different model in mind when working with clients. Rogers believed that personality could be explained by the importance of prophesies and self-fulfilling tendencies (McLeod, 2014).

Hi,
You mentioned dignity and respect, Rogers described this capacity as an actualizing tendency, or a form of self-actualization. In his theory, all people strive toward order. People want balance. They want life to have a greater level of complexity. That meant people also have a vast resource they can tap into that my alter their concept of self, right down to their core basic attitudes. Next to Abraham Maslow, Rogers focused on the growth potential of healthy individuals and contributed greatly through the humanist theory of personality to self-understanding self Both Rogers’ and Maslow’s theories focus on individual choices, and neither holds that biology is deterministic. Both emphasized the free will and self. (Person Centered Therapy: Definition, Goals and Techniques, 2019)
