This week is very open-ended. We are making an effort to understand a core element of democracy and that is Freedom of the Press. Yet, This is not precisely free, it is conditional in many ways as it relates to National Security, Libel, Obscenity, Cruelty and Violence, and other issues that limit what is published through self-censorship and also direct censorship by government actors (Prior restraint, news gathering and special rights)
- Your question is open-ended and seeks to have you reflect on the how limited or unrestricted written and oral expression is in the United States. Freedom of the press depends on the the relationship that exists between the government and the citizen. Does government extend the right of a free press to the people or the people instruct the government its rights and powers? Consider the Internet as an area where new law or interpretations of laws will have to emerge (and already are).
