“Presentation: Religious Movements of the Kamakura Period

This project should identify and describe one of the religious movements of the Kamakura Period (eg. Rinzai Zen, S?t? Zen, Pure Land, True Pure Land, Nichiren, Kamakura Period Christianity, etc. – you can choose any religious movement, but please make sure you get approval from the professor).

Your presentation should be 8-10 minutes long, and it should be presented as a PowerPoint slideshow, with sound (meaning you are going to give us a lecture on this topic). These will be posted into the course shell so that others can watch your presentations.

In your presentation, you should tell us:

  • Basic concepts/teachings of the religious movement
  • Historical context for the movement, including how it might be a reaction/response to previously existing schools
  • Information about the founder (or major reformer if there is no founder)
  • Influence of the movement on Kamakura Period Japan (and beyond)
  • Major centers (cities, temples)
  • Current statistics/presence in Japan
