1. I really liked how he started with “most people have great ideas but don’t get things done”. I completely understand that because most people get so wrapped up in the ideas of things but can’t move past the ideas. I also really liked how right off the back he makes the difference of a leader and a manager. Any one going into business should know the difference. I have taken a few Clark classes and he drills into your head that leaders choose the vision and managers decide how to make it happen. I was excited to see that this presentation used the same concept. The guy also brought up that if you are not doing mass production then you are doing a “project”. Along with that, 90% of the world is projects and that means that 90% of the world is unhappy. I can relate to that because people don’t like uncertainty and try to avoid those kind of situations. “Never allow the important become urgency” was a quote I really liked during the presentation. I do that all the time when I’m working on multiple projects at a time. If I follow that quote I would surely have a better output. I would also have to agree with the idea that a skinny project is better. Fat projects incorporate a lot of steps, people, and usually are more complicated on finishing. The Plotting Buffer was my biggest take away from this presentation. Its a very interesting concept to have employees that are only used to help projects if they become in the red zone. That is the only thing they are used for, which I find very interesting because I can’t see many companies liking that idea or being able to afford employees that sit most of the day. If they can afford to have “resource bench” employees I can see it being very beneficial for them though.

I liked off the bat the quote he said, “If you have great ideas but don’t get anything done, then what have you done?” He says that his target is a world of people who need to get things done but don’t. To identify who are the people that need to get things done we need to know the roles in an organization. The roles in organization: leadership who set the vision, workers who actually make the things happen, and management who decide what and when to do things. From there are many directions that we can do in order to find a solution but the one I found most important from this video and the other videos we watched is knowing what to worry about. It seems like identifying out what the priority is and what can wait is very important in management. I was very surprised when he said that 90% of the project world doesn’t use project tools. They have these tools available to them but they don’t utilize them. I don’t understand why they wouldn’t want to access this if it will make the project easier. When he was going over potential solutions he made mention they had a separate task of people who worked on problems that occur within the project. It reminded me of when Toyota was very successful. They had a task force that was set up to find problems before they happened. Once they removed that task force they had many issues within the company and started to fail. Similar to the people they have getting people out of “the red” or SWOT team. They are able to identify the problems and where they can improve. Seeing that other companies and even this speaker thinks having people to identify problems reinforces this is a good idea to have for a business.
