In one of the readings, Nancy Scheper-Hughes describes her conversion to militant (i.e. activist) anthropology. While working with women in a shantytown in Brazil, her research subjects demanded that she help them fight political battles to improve their lives, not just document their suffering for the sake of scholarship.
