I’m working on a writing discussion question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.
Your first post must: 1. Include a response to one or more of the discussion prompts, a response to a topic or issue raised in a reading that was not included in a prompt, and/or an exploration of a connection that you made between two or more readings; and 2. A question that your peers may respond to. You may make references to previous readings, additional relevant academic or newspaper articles, and/or any personal insights or experiences that you may have had that relate directly to topic of the week. If you do reference a personal experience, be sure to clearly explain how or why it links to the readings; your responses should never consist primarily of a description of something that you experienced.
400 words
- Compare and contrast two instances from the readings or videos in which the wishes of Indigenous people were ignored. Do you feel there were differing levels of disrespect? Why or why not? Do you think othering played a role in the tourists’ decisions to ignore the Indigenous peoples’ wishes? Why or why not?
- Compare and contrast the ways in which two different museums discussed in the readings or videos display or interpret Indigenous artifacts or Indigenous history. You might consider what the respective museums choose to display (or not) and the forms the respective displays take. You might also consider the perspective of any interpretations or explanations appearing in captions or on plaques.
- Discuss examples of intelligent participation and what motivates different guides, interpreters, or performers.
- Discuss how and why self-exoticization is employed.
- Discuss a case from one of the readings or videos in which a tourist felt they had an authentic experience or were disappointed because they felt their experience was not authentic. What type of authenticity was present or lacking? Why did the tourist feel that way?
