Assignment – Discussion Board Forum 1

Topic: Concert of Europe and Growing Tensions

In 1815 Europe was recovering from nearly a quarter-century of war with the French Revolutionary army or Napoleon’s Grande Armée. The next thirty years consisted of movements to quell revolution, but featured pockets of liberalism inspired by the indelible mark of Enlightenment thinking throughout Europe. For this first week discuss what you see as the tension between the conservative rulers remaining between 1815 and 1848 and the liberal movements looming underneath. What cultural influences guide the people from below and what ideas concern the conservative rulers at the top?

For this period you are free to discuss any country which you find interesting that features this conflict. France, Prussia, the German Confederation, Austria, Italy, or Russia are good examples to start. However, do not feel limited to this list.

Replies: If possible, pick someone’s thread that chose a different country and discuss the similarities and differences shared. Are there examples that they may not have covered that you can think of? How does this tie into the larger movements happening in Europe at the time?

Submit your thread by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Thursday of Module/Week 1. Submit your replies by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Monday of the same module/week.

Thank You
