MKGT 465 CSUC Different Meaning to The Advertising Industry Discussion

Wikipedia describes “Social Media” as “computer-mediated technologies that facilitate the creation and sharing of information, ideas, career interests and other forms of expression via virtual communities and networks.” In a marketing/promotion context, however, reference to social media takes on quite a different meaning, as social media platforms and websites are often designed to primarily persuade and influence consumers’ buying decisions. As such, and perhaps not surprisingly, many “experts” consider social media to be one of the most dynamic and effective mediums that marketers currently have at their disposal.

In February, 2014, PBS first broadcast a Frontline investigation, titled “Generation Like”

— a provocative examination of marketers’ attempts to influence young (teenage) consumers.

For this assignment, here’s your chance to chime in!

After viewing the “Generation Like” video AND reviewing the top videos of all time link, I would like you to consider the following questions:

1. Is it obvious to you — What are the primary factors/characteristics separating social media marketing from marketing via more traditional channels?

2.  What makes a video go “viral.”  Were there any common themes you found when reviewing the top videos of all time and looking at some of the viral videos in Generation Like?  Did they have anything in common that could help you make a video that goes “viral?”

3. What opportunities and threats do you foresee social media marketers facing in the near (and distant) future?
