Dual Process Theories of cognition suggest that people process information in two ways. Type 1 thinking is automatic (fast, outside of awareness, etc.), while Type 2 thinking is deliberate (slow, under your control, etc.).

  • Think about the last week. When did you use Type 1 thinking and when did you use Type 2 thinking? When did you use one type when you probably should have used the other?
  • In general, in which situations or contexts might Type 1 thinking be superior? When would Type thinking 2 be superior?

Research shows that parenting style is related to a child’s psychosocial development. Your text describes several parenting styles, including authoritative, permissive, and authoritarian.

Think back to your own upbringing.

  • Which type of parenting style did you experience from your parent(s) or guardian(s)? Explain your answer.
  • How do you think being parented in this way influenced your development? Does your own experience match the research?
  • If you have children (or plan to have children), will what you’ve learned about development impact how you parent? Why or why not?

*Note: Only write what you feel comfortable sharing, and remember to be respectful of others’ differing backgrounds and experiences in your comments.

Erik Erikson proposed that psychosocial development occurs across a series of stages over the course of the lifespan.

  • According to Erikson’s theory, what stage are you likely in at your current age? Describe this stage as Erikson would.
  • Do you find yourself experiencing the crisis expected in this stage? Why or why not?
  • What virtues, questions, and values actually define you at this time in your life? Do those align with an alternative stage discussed in Erikson’s theory?
