I am part of the Civil Air Patrol, a youth leadership program. We are trained to stand up to problems, brainstorm solutions, implement plans, and evaluate the outcome. A few years ago, we had a Search and Rescue Training Excercise (SARex), called Operation Wolverine. Youth leaders in our organization were assigned to run it; people from all over the state came together. Days before the event, a call for more staff was sent out. As such, I answered, I was put in the position of Mission Staff Assistant to the Air Branch Director. My main duty was to schedule flights, ensuring everyone was where they were needed. It was all well and good until the last flight wherein the Air Force assigned us to fly over Michigan Stadium, in Temporarily Restricted Airspace as there was an ongoing football game. Our pilots got quite a scare with the news that they would be escorted by fighter pilots to take pictures of the game. But, my team and I had made all the preparations, we were confident in our plan – communicate with Air Force pilots and take pictures – and our calm energy seemed to rub off on the flight crew. No one was going to get shot down today. In the end, the sortie itself went off without a hitch, however, in our debriefing we learned we forgot to notify the public. It gave the audience a nice surprise to see a Cessna 172 flying over their football game. All in all, the best leadership comes from preparedness.
