I’m trying to learn for my Religion class and I’m stuck. Can you help?
I chose Michelangelo because he was also my favorite Ninja Turtle, and I had the toy when I was a kid. But little did I know of his contributions in real life, aside from the fact that he made the statue of David. It turns out Michelangelo was one of the top artists back in the Renaissance period. He’s well known for his painting of the creation of man, on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, as many tourists go to visit it to this day [1].
In creating David, Michelangelo took inspiration from the Old Testament and saw David as a hero, with energetic and athletic qualities being expressed in his battle and dominion over the monster Goliath. Michelangelo captured the essence of David on his masterpiece which stands 17 feet tall in Florence, Italy [2].
Michelangelo’s work reflects Humanist ethos in the sense that he was able to use his own creativity and express himself in his art, given the reign of free expression. In the Renaissance period, a sense personal freedom in art and science began to take form, and Michelangelo was an artist who embodies that sense of freedom to create what he was inspired to.
