Prepare a Brief: Healthcare Delivery

Identify and describe a healthcare delivery organization or hospital close to you or for which you have a special interest. Review its annual report online and compile a brief that responds to each of the elements listed below:

  • Name, address, Web address, organization type, and method of care delivery (out-patient, in-patient, etc.)
  • The organization’s mission statement
  • Who owns the organization?
  • What type(s) of facility/organization is it designated (for profit, not for profit, etc.)
  • How many patients are served monthly? How many beds are staffed vs. licensed for?
  • What is the maximum patient load/occupancy rate daily?
  • What are the major departments?
  • What services does it offer?
  • Does it offer charity care? If so, what are the standards used to determine who receives care?
  • Does it receive any local, state, or federal subsidies?

Review your lectures. Then:

  • Identify, how many Americans remain uninsured despite the PPACA (Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act), using the most current scholarly resource available.
  • Identify how many Americans are currently signed up for and have paid premium for the PPACA.
  • Discuss the current cost to Americans in subsidies, which are financially supporting the PPACA. What is the current fine charged by the IRS to those without insurance and how much will it increase in 2016? Will this fine increase have a negative or positive impact? Explain why.

  • Compare the difference between ER/Trauma units Designation and Verification.
  • What agency is responsible for these functions?
  • List detailed requirements for Level 1, 2, and 3 Trauma units as outlined by the ACS (American College of Surgeons).

  • As Boards are prohibited from managing, discuss the major duty of a Board. By what mechanism does a board understand the status of the hospital financially and operationally?

  • What is D/O (Directors/Officers) insurance and why is it needed?

There is great controversy over whether a patient will be able to retain or choose his or her doctors with the advent of the PPACA. In addition, many existing plans are being ruled as incompatible with the requirements of the PPACA and discontinued or canceled as a result. Explore and explain whether the patients will be able to continue with their physicians and the rationale behind the plan cancelation. Additionally, identify the effect of expanding state Medicaid roles and the impact it has upon cost and non-reimbursable care.
