QUESTION :Research how operations management changed over the past 50 years, and consider current technology and future trends. Apply this information to determine what it might take for African countries or Southeast Asia (Vietnam, Thailand, etc) countries to catch up and surpass the other developed countries in terms of operational capabilities? Also, how would developing industries such as the technology industry assist in the development and innovation within areas such as higher education?
MY ANSWER :Over the past 50 years, the operations management field has transformed due to the increased technological advancements. Currently, organizations have changed how they execute their operation management to increased productivity. The integration of technology in production systems, manufacturing, and design, such as Computer-Aided Manufacturing System (CAM), and advanced devices in automation of production processes are trending (Bayraktar et al., 2007). This has made organizations step up their game and revolutionize their operations management by investing in technologies that help transform processes with enhanced flexibility, quality, and minimized cost of production.
The pressure is on African and Southeast Asia countries, such as Vietnam and Thailand, to catch up and surpass the other developed nations in terms of operational capabilities. Bayraktar et al. (2007) inform that these countries need to encourage innovative mindsets through policies that motivate the citizens to play their role to achieve the projected progress. Furthermore, these countries need to participate in benchmarking initiatives in countries taking the lead in technological inventions, such as Germany and Japan. Such measures would influence these nations’ digital developments and operational capabilities.
Apart from the significant transformations in operations management influenced by technological advancements, the innovations have improved higher education through sophisticated learning management systems. Currently, students have the opportunity to enroll in distance learning regardless of their geographical locations. This progress will make it easier for education institutions to support students in in-class settings and online platforms to improve their academic journey through inclusive and flexible study modules. For instance, instead of having the typical semester-based learning systems, the course length will vary depending on the students’ availability and choice of delivery (The Economist Intelligence Unit, 2008). Furthermore, there are projections of unique interdisciplinary combinations and inter-university collaborations due to the crafted individualized degree programs. These improvements will help diversify the courses and invent learning materials that match the new developments.
