Students–The Civil Rights Act was enacted in July 1964. To understand the significance of Title VII of that act it is important to remember what America was like prior to the enactment of the Civil Rights Act and how Title VII has become both a powerful sword and a shield for all Americans.

In this Extra Credit assignment, you are to discuss pre 1964 America, considering as part of your discussion the Plessy v Ferguson, Brown v Board of Education and Loving v Virginia Supreme Court cases as part of your anaysis. You are also encouraged to discuss other pre and post Civil Rights Act cases that add to your discussion.

You are also to explore and discuss the historical events and the congressional debates leading up to the passage of the Civil Rights Act and how that legislation changed our country for either the better or for the worse.

This assignment is geared towards a historical analysis of our American history including the Civil Rights Act which will include some research on your part.
