Metropolitan Community College Kansas City W5 APA Manual Discussion

For Week Five DB read chapters 8 and 10 in the APA manual. Remember, this is the book you had to purchase for the class.  It is not an online or Auto Access book.  Please answer the following questions using the information provided under the Modules tab regarding APA Citations and information from chapters 8 & 10 in the APA manual. Please write out the question followed by the answer.

1.  What are your thoughts on how knowing how to cite medical articles in APA format relates to knowing medical terminology and your future health care career?

2.  Name three type of citation styles found in the information provided under the Modules tab.

3.  From chapter 10 in the APA manual give an example of how to write a citation for a journal article with DOI with 21 or more authors. (It is ok to copy the example given in the book.  If you copy this example, what section was it in and on what page number?)

4.  From chapter 10 in the APA manual give an example of how to write a citation for a journal article with DOI. (It is ok to copy the example given in the book.  If you copy this example, what section was it in and on what page number?)

5.  From chapter 8 in the APA manual, write a short paragraph explaining  when it is appropriate to use the term “et al”.  (8.17 and 8.18).

6.  Write a citation for the APA manual.

In addition write five sentences using words you learned in chapters 10 and 11. As always, respond to two post by your fellow students.

Student 1:

1. What are your thoughts on how knowing how to cite medical articles in APA format relates to knowing medical terminology and your future health care career?

I think it is very important to know how to properly cite medical articles in APA in relation to this class because I would not want to plagiarize. I find that if I’m unsure of a term or if I want to learn more about a term, I google it. Most of the time a medical-related article comes up with information about the said term. If I were to write about it, I would need to cite the article because that information/knowledge did not come from me. This directly correlates to my further health care career and grad school because again I would not want to steal other people’s thoughts/knowledge. Additionally, if I ever chose to write a paper or even a blog I would then know how to properly cite my sources in APA format.

  1. Name three types of citation styles found in the information provided under the Modules tab.

APA, MLA, and CSE

  1. From chapter 10 in the APA manual give an example of how to write a citation for a journal article with DOI with 21 or more authors. (It is ok to copy the example given in the book. If you copy this example, what section was it in and on what page number?). (NOTE: Citations need hanging indent. Wasn’t sure how to do it on canvas)

  1. From chapter 10 in the APA manual give an example of how to write a citation for a journal article with DOI. (It is ok to copy the example given in the book. If you copy this example, what section was it in and on what page number?)

Section 10.1: Journal article with a DOI page 317

  1. From chapter 8 in the APA manual, write a short paragraph explaining when it is appropriate to use the term “et al”. (8.17 and 8.18).

It is appropriate to use the term “et al” when you have a group of three or more authors. Also, if you have three different groups the in-text citation would include the first name of the group and then “et al”. Additionally, if you have multiple works with the same authors and publication year, you’re able to use the term “et al”.

  1. Write a citation for the APA manual.

Student 2:

  1. What are your thoughts on how knowing how to cite medical articles in APA format relates to knowing medical terminology and your future health care career?

Careers in health care rely on evidence from research to base their approach to treating patients. As a future physician, I need to understand how to find work that is cited in medical articles as well as how to write citations when I am the author. Just how medical terminology is specific, citation styles are specific to scientific communities. Since health care uses APA format, it’s vital that I understand it.

  1. Name three type of citation styles found in the information provided under the Modules tab.

American Psychological Society (APA), Modern Language Association (MLA), and Counsel of Science Editors (CSE) are three different types of citation styles.

  1. From chapter 10 in the APA manual give an example of how to write a citation for a journal article with DOI with 21 or more authors. (It is ok to copy the example given in the book. If you copy this example, what section was it in and on what page number?)

This example was in section 10.1 on page 317.

  1. From chapter 8 in the APA manual, write a short paragraph explaining when it is appropriate to use the term “et al”. (8.17 and 8.18).

It is appropriate to use the term “et al.” when citing a source with three or more authors. You use the first author’s name and “et al.” is used instead of the other authors’ names. However, if there are other works from the same first author in the same year, we would want to add additional author(s) until the citation would be distinguishable.

The American Psychological Association (APA, 2020) states, “Self-plagiarism deceives readers by making it appear that more information is available on a topic than really exists” (p.256).
