In at least 250 words (total), and drawing on Gaieck et al. (2020), Sternberg et al. (2015), and (if you wish) any of the other knowledge you gained in this biology and society course, convince your Congresswoman–who has no training in science–that the NHGRI’s budget for genome editing work should be increased.
(1) State the framing for your request. (This could be a medical framing, an economic framing, a biological framing, or something else.) In other words, describe the broad reason why an increase in the NHGRI’s genome editing budget would be valuable for your local district OR the country at large.
(2) Using language you believe would be accessible to your Congresswoman provide evidence, from Gaieck et al. (2015) or any other Module in this course, that CRISPR research has shown promise in the lab in relation to the framing you provided. Note: You can think of this part of the assignment as flipping the audience of the Sternberg et al. (2015) piece from scientists to a policymaker.
(3) Explain to your Congresswoman how you plan on following up to evaluate whether your request to her has been effective.
