“Probability” Please respond to both of the following:

  • What is probability?  Give a real life example of something that has the probability of about 0%, something that has the probability of about 50%, and something that has the probability of about 100%.
  • What is the difference between classical and empirical probability?  Go to this website:  http://www.shodor.org/interactivate/activities/Coin/, and run the coin tossing simulation.  Change the total number of tosses from 10, to 100, to 1000.  Be sure to clear your results before you run a new trial.  How do your results change as you increase the number of tosses?  How does this relate to classical and empirical probability?  Display your results in this table:
  • Heads Tails Number of Tosses Probability of Heads,
    written as a decimal
    Probability of Tails,
    written as a decimal

Respond to at least one of these prompts:

  • Provide one example to show how you can use the Expected Value computation to assess the fairness of a situation (probability experiment). Provide the detailed steps and calculations.
  • Develop a tree diagram for tossing two, eight-sided gaming dice to figure out how many possibilities there are. Discuss the purpose of using such a visual in working out probability.

Lastly, provide a web link that supports at least one of the topics from this week.  Use one that is not given in the Instructor Insights Section and different than those already posted.  Why did you find this website useful?
