DISCUSSION POST:

Watch the following scenario video.

Case study clinical example: First session with a client with symptoms of depression (CBT model)

Discuss which type of therapy (individual, group, or family with specific modalities) would be the best choice for this client as it correlates to the signs and symptoms described. Keep in mind that many therapy modalities can be applied to a variety of diagnoses.  Choose what would be the best and give a rationale for your choice with supporting evidence.

EXAMPLE:

According to case scenario, this patient appears to be suffering from depression. Therefore, it is my opinion, the best choice for this client as it correlates to the signs and symptoms (“low mood, struggling to pull self out of it… relationship break-up, loneliness, negative thoughts, and  stress.”) described would be Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). CBT is the best-known psychological treatment in the field (David et al., 2018). CBT is a cognitive and behavioral approach that aims to improve the quality of life for client’s with depression. The approach of CBT aims to reduce unhelpful thoughts and behaviors that are common in those with depression to help develop effective coping mechanisms that will challenge dysfunctional emotions, negative thoughts, and actions by reducing symptoms (Psychology Today, 2021).

CBT is a widely used psychological intervention for the treatment of various psychiatric disorders. It can be utilized for the treatment of anxiety, substance use disorder, and marital discord. It has also been shown to work in treating psychosis, PTSD, and many other conditions (Gautam et al., 2020).

There has been a sufficient number of studies conducted on the effectiveness of CBT in treating depression. The meta-analysis of 115 studies showed that CBT is an effective treatment for individuals suffering from depression. Evidence also suggests that patients with depression who use CBT have a lower relapse rate than those who use pharmacotherapy alone (Gautam et al., 2020).
