Emerging Diseases
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), an emerging disease is one that has appeared in a population for the first time, or that may have existed previously but is rapidly increasing in incidence or geographic range (2013). If a disease was previously unknown in a location, the disease is considered to be emerging. However, if the disease had been present at the location in the past and was considered eradicated or controlled, the disease is considered to be re-emerging (Shrivastava, Shrivastava, & Ramasamy, 2013). For this week’s discussion, choose an emerging or reemerging disease to research in more detail.
Review “Emerging and Re-Emerging Infectious Diseases” from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and “Infectious Disease Information: Emerging Infectious Diseases” from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and answer the following:
•What disease did you select and what are the symptoms of this disease?
•What is the cause of the disease?
•How is it spread?
•What treatments are available?

Response Guidelines
Read the posts of your peers and respond to at least two. Select peers who investigated diseases different from the one you investigated. What further questions do you have about the disease and its treatment? Be sure to respond to any questions posed to you by your peers and instructor.
