Part 1:Homeland Security Risk Management Structures

In preparation for this activity, read Chapters 4 and 5 in your textbook before responding to the following:

• Explain the development of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and how this massive agency is organized.
• Do you agree with the way in which the three directorates are organized and their specific functions? If not, what changes would you recommend?
• Discuss the role of other federal risk agencies. Why is it important for these agencies to take on critical infrastructure responsibilities?

Part 2: Risk Management Agencies and Activities

In preparation for this activity, read Chapters 4 and 5 in your textbook before responding to the following:

• Select two of the risk management agencies identified in Chapters 4 or 5 of your text. Research these agencies further and explain how each provides risk and resilience support to our critical infrastructures.
• Compare your agencies and discuss how their risk related activities contribute to a definition of critical infrastructure protection as set forth by the DHS:

“Those assets, systems and networks, whether physical or virtual, so vital to the United States that their incapacitation or destruction would have a debilitating effect on security, national economic security, public health or safety, or any combination thereof.”
