Part 1: Learn about Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary Sources

First, go to this link: https://lacitycollege.libguides.com/primarysecondary).

Make sure to watch the video “Primary, Secondary & Tertiary Sources (video)”. Make sure you understand the difference between the three types of sources.

Part 2: Research a Slope Failure

Now, you will find a primary, secondary, and tertiary source of information about a historical slope failure. Select a slope failure, either from Lecture 8.3: Slope Failures (40 min) or quick research on Google (“famous landslides” is a good search term). Some suggestions: the 2018 Southern California landslides, 2005 La Conchita, 1970 Yungay Peru, 1963 Vajont Dam Italy, etc. Try to choose one with a lot of available information that occurred around humans.

Part 3: Discuss

now please respond to this prompt with the following information:

Paragraph 1:

  • What did you learn from the tutorial video about the three types of sources?
  • Find ONE of the following types of sources. Cite it and describe it for your fellow students (make sure to specify which type of source you’re citing!):

1. Primary source: find an eyewitness account of your chosen landslide. Copy a quote from someone who was there, including the name of source and where you found it. How does this quote help you understand the event? What type of information is missing from this source?

2. Secondary source: find a news article about your chosen landslide. Include the title, author, and date of the article and what newspaper it was published in. How does this article help you understand the event? What type of information is missing from this source?

3. Tertiary source: find an encyclopedia or other tertiary source that helps you understand what happened in the slope failure you’ve chosen. Cite the source. How does this source help you understand the event? What type of information is missing from this source?

Paragraph 2:

  • Report the following pieces of information about your chosen slope failure:
    • When did this event occur?
    • Where was it located?
    • What was the death toll?
    • What is the proper mass wasting terminology for what occurred? (mud slide, debris flow, rock fall, etc.)

once done with prompt please respond to TWO other replies that i will send after, with the following content. Try to respond to someone who hasn’t had a response yet! (4 points)

  • Did they accurately categorize their chosen source? (In other words, if they cited a primary source, did they say it was a primary source?) If not, kindly correct them.
  • Did they accurately categorize their chosen slope failure? (In other words, if they reported on a rock slide, did they say it was a rock slide?) If not, kindly correct them.
  • What additional information would you like learn about their chosen slope failure?
