Purpose

In this discussion, you will reflect and share your thoughts about what you feel a person with disabilities encounters and should have access to when they are in the workplace.

Skills

  • MLO #2.3: Explain and analyze legal mandates requiring reasonable accommodations needed by people with disabilities in daily living, the workplace, public services, public accommodations, and education.
  • MLO #3.3: Identify and describe the legal mandates for including individuals with disabilities in the workplace.
  • MLO #3.4: Analyze the issues surrounding workplace discrimination against people with disabilities, and associated impact on workers with disabilities.

Knowledge

This discussion will also help you to become familiar with the following important content knowledge in this discipline: 

Course Objective 3: Examine the individual and collective contribution of family, work, independent living and education on the quality of life and life-long outcomes of people with disabilities.

Is making the workplace accessible solely about physical accommodations, or is there something more critical that has to change: attitudes about hiring people with disabilities?  We can’t legislate attitudes, and if we don’t hire employable people with disabilities, all the workplace, all the legal protections in the world are meaningless. How can we as fellow workers and as customers/clients change hearts and minds to encourage employers to hire people with disabilities?
