Sartre’s essay “Existentialism is a Humanism,” and Strassberg’s article on Post-Modern ethics, post your thoughts about how Kant’s notion of a “categorical imperative” is similar to Mill’s idea about “the greatest good for the greatest number,” as well as how it is strikingly different from the stress on moral freedom and autonomy held by Existentialists, Nietzsche, and the post-modernists. Then describe which grounding for morality and ethics you find more appealing: (1) a common principle founded on reason and universal applicability in all cases, or (2) a morality based on authenticity, freedom, and responsibility — and why.
