1. Watch Amy’s video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VGiUH0t2BkE (Links to an external site.)
(1) What did you think of Amy’s book? Likes? Dislikes? What changes would you make or feedback would you give to her for changes? Would you use the book as a resource if you were a professional in the field (e.g., a Child Life Specialist, a teacher, a licensed clinical social worker, etc)?
2. Choose one of this week’s articles (choose from Shivers, Burke, or Orsmond)
Briefly summarize the article, its findings or results, and describe what you think is the take home message or messages if more than one. Finally, what kind of research would you like to see when it comes to siblings adjustment, coping and wellbeing? Describe briefly the variables and what outcomes you would test.
3. Create a sibshops activity, lesson plan or event from start to finish. Include the following information so if others wanted to replicate the activity, they could.
- What is your specific goal for this activity? If there are multiple goals, what are they? Write them out as Goal # 1.. Goal # 2.. and so on.
- How would you advertise your sibshop activity/lesson/event? Where and to whom? How would you make sure you get enough participants?
- What materials and/or equipment do you need? Be specific.
- What developmental theory are you basing your lesson on (e.g., play-based, stress model, cognitive development, behaviorism, other)?
- Describe the activity/lesson plan/event. Be specific for full points. Imagine that someone else needs to replicate it without your help.
- How would you know that your sibshop activity/lesson/event was successful?
- What size group are you aiming for?
- Who do you need to hire to help with the activity/lesson/event? What qualifications would you look for in this person?
- Where would the sibshop event be held?
- Every event has its challenges, no matter how organized one is. What challenges do you foresee?
- What is an alternative activity, if someone should not want to participate in the activity once they get there (the child says it’s stupid, this is baby-ish, they don’t feel like it, etc)?
- Note: you may prepare this hypothetical sibshop activity/lesson/event as if it were face-to-face in anticipation of California COVID-19 restrictions being lifted OR you can create the sibshops activity virtually. You choose.
