In this discussion, please identify how the theme of class runs through the short story “After the Race” by James Joyce, When I write class, what I mean is how the different socio-economic positions of the characters impact the action of the narrative. Clearly Jimmy is the central character, and he occupies of different class position than some of the other characters (or at least he holds a more tenuous and recently achieved position in the upper classes). What indications are there throughout the story that Jimmy is concerned with appearances? With how he is perceived by others? And of how he thinks about himself in relation to his comrades?
And finally, how does the class dynamic between Jimmy and his friends manifest itself in the climactic card game?
