Assignment:  Write a five or six paragraph, logical division essay about any topic you choose. 

 

***For a logical division essay, make sure that you are looking at causes, reasons, types, kinds, qualities, methods, or advantages.  Choose only ONE of these!  Do not include cause AND effect or advantages AND disadvantages!  These are different essay styles that we will discuss later in the semester.

 

Steps you must follow to complete your assignment:

 

  1. Begin by brainstorming everything you know about your topic.
  2. Organize your ideas by writing a brief outline of your essay
  3. Write an introduction paragraph that includes a hook and thesis statement. The thesis statement should clearly state the topic of your essay and the subdivisions
  4. Write the body of the essay – include transitional signals.  You must have at least three paragraphs in the body.  Your paragraphs should be unified and coherent
  5. Write a concluding paragraph- summarize or restate the thesis statement and also include a closing thought

    Format (5 points):

    Name, date, instructor’s name, title, indented paragraphs, 1 inch margins,

    double-spaced, typed

     

     

    Mechanics (5 points):

    Correct use of: capital letters, spelling,

          and punctuation

     

    Organization:

     

    Thesis Statement: (10 points)

    Topic + Controlling Idea, one sentence

    Not too general, Not too specific

    Clearly expresses the main point

     

     

    Introductory Paragraph: (10 points)

    Hook + connector + Thesis Statement

    At least 3 sentences, related to the topic

     

     

    Supporting Paragraphs: (10 points)

    Topic Sentences related to the Thesis

    All support/details explain the topic

         sentence

    Everything is relevant

     

     

    Concluding Paragraph: (10 points)

    Restates the main idea OR restates the

          main points, does not repeat exactly

    Concluding Thought is a prediction,

         consequence, result, solution,

         recommendation, or quote

     

    Sentence Structure

     

    Unity (10 points):

    Each paragraph explains only one idea

    Every sentence relates directly to the

          topic sentence

     

     

    Cohesion (10 points):

    Good use of transition signals (not too

          many or too few)

    Ideas are in a logical order

    Pronouns are consistent (singular or

          plural)

    Key  nouns are repeated appropriately in

         order to keep the topic clear

     

    Grammar (5 points)

    Sentence Structure (10 points):

    Brainstorm, Outline, Rough Draft (15 points)
