(1) What is the main idea or central theme of chapter thirteen “Warriors for God and Region”?
(2) What were the debates regarding the dismantling of the ‘peculiar institution’ (i.e., American slavery)? What were the causes of the Civil War? Was the Civil War inevitable or unavoidable in your view?
(3) What were similarities and/or differences between Frederick Douglass’ and Harriet Beecher Stowe’s views of Christianity and slavery?
(4) What was President Lincoln’s own religion? Do you agree or disagree with Lincoln’s views on God, slavery, and the Civil War?
Response
Q4) The religion of President Lincoln has come under debate, his parents were strict baptists, but Lincoln seemed to have actually rebelled against the religion that his parents formed a part of, and even seemed to challenge some of the values that christianity held at the time, since he believed different churches fought as hard between each other, as if they were fighting against the devil himself, Peter Cartwright a methodist opponent of his even went as far as stating that Lincoln did not have a religion, which was later corroborated by close friends of lincoln’s after his death, due to the fact that Abraham Lincoln was the only President to have never joined a church, Lincoln was known however to have had experience reading the bible, it is thought that due to his parents beliefs and deaths of two of his sons that he saw God in a different manner.
I agree with Lincoln’s view of who was at fault for slavery, and the truth is that both sides were at fault for it because the confederacy wished for slavery, and the Union did not decide to intervene until they felt like slavery was affecting their lives. I honestly do not believe in a great chunk of the bible, so I honestly doubt that God would punish the lashes that slaves suffered with the blood of everyone, seeing as how the civil war was the most violent in history of the U.S. I do believe that Lincoln had some good points about the civil war, but I think that it is a good thing that it happened.
