4. Provide a brief overview of “Perceiving and Moving” to include hearing, seeing, smelling and touch.
5. A. What is the difference between gross and fine motor skills? B. Provide an example for each.
6. Read the Article, “Breastfeeding by Gerber” & “Malnutrition ~ Meeting the Global Challenge.” Following, describe three important points that you learned about breastfeeding, three important points that you learned about nutrition and three important points that you learned about malnutrition.
Chapter 6 Essay Questions
1. A. Briefly describe Piaget’s Six Stages of Intellectual Progression: Primary Circular Reactions, Secondary Circular Reactions, and Tertiary Reactions. B. In your own opinion, how are these stages related to “cognition?” No right or wrong answer… simply your opinion. Look up Webster’s definition of “cognition.”
2. In your own words, describe what is meant by “Information Processing.” Review the slide in the PowerPoint on “Memory.” This may help you better understand how to address this question.
3. View the video, Nurturing Your Child’s Early Brain Development ~ Interview with Dr. Chaya Kulkarni.Go back and read the section in your textbook and in your PowerPoint regarding “Affordances.” How do Affordances relate to Dr. Chaya Kulkdarni’s presentation? Hint: Adult’s Role!
Chapter 7 Reflective Essay Questions
1. Briefly describe the first two years of the infant’s emotional development from birth through 18 months of age. Hint: See 2nd slide in the “Chapter 7: The First Two Years, Psychological Development” PowerPoint.
2. All infants experience a normal level of sadness and fear. A. What conditions cause infants and toddlers to become chronically fearful and depressed children? B. What is your solution for preventing infants and toddlers from being exposed to conditions that cause fear and depression? There is no wrong or right answer. My thought… if we reach the parents, can we save the child? I don’t have all the answers. I am searching for solutions too. Note: See “Child Maltreatment: Summary of Findings” in the Learning Module. Read, “Who Were the Victims?,” and “How Many Children Died From Abuse or Neglect?
3. A. Describe the three following temperaments: Flexible, Feisty, and Fearful. This is the work of Dr. Richard Lally. B. Do you give these temperaments credence? Why or why not. (PowerPoint: Temperament Slide).
4. Review the section on “Attachment” in your textbook. Be sure and read the section on “Insights from Romania” on pages 187 through 190. In addition, you will find helpful information on “Attachment” in the PowerPoint. View the videos, “Creating Secure Infant Attachments,” and “Children From Hard Places and the Brain Review.” Following, write a 2 paragraph overview on Brain Development, Adversity, and Attachment. Use at least one statement from each source listed above to support your work. I know this is a tall order, but it matters greatly in the life of a child. Note: You may also want to look up the definition of “Attachment Disorder” before addressing this question.
