| 3. | This paper is divided into Parts A and B with three questions each. You are required to answer ONE question from Part A, ONE question from Part B, and ONE question from either Part A or B. You have to answer a total of THREE questions and each question carries one-third of the total score. You should write for not more than 800 words (excluding references) for each of the 3 questions. |
| 4. | This take-home assignment should be YOUR OWN WORK. Please do not collaborate or discuss your answers with your fellow classmates. Answers found highly similar to one another will all receive a zero mark. |
| 5. | You are expected to provide in-text citations and a reference list for each of the attempted questions (in total = 3 reference lists). |
Part A
- To what extent can the principle of Felicific Calculus explain crime? Answer the question with examples.
- Critically examine the view that female offending behaviour would increase in an egalitarian society with relevant example/s.
- Outline the main arguments of Merton’s Strain theory and discuss to what extent it can explain criminal behaviour. Please illustrate with example/s.
Part B
- Outline the main arguments of Hirschi’s social control theory and discuss to what extent it can explain crime. Please explain with example/s.
- Critically evaluate “rehabilitation” as a justification of punishment in modern societies.
