Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to engage you in critical reflection regarding chronic illness.
Skills: This assignment will help you gain the following skills that are essential to your success in class:
- Demonstrate critical thinking when providing a viewpoint and personal perspective.
Knowledge: This assignment will help you become familiar with the following important content knowledge in the discipline:
- How certain chronic illnesses can impact one’s lifestyle as well as physical and mental health
- The emotional impacts of chronic illness on a partnership
- Misconceptions surrounding people struggling with a chronic illness
Task: Please answer the following questions using complete sentences (unless otherwise indicated), 12-point font, and double spaced. Please number your answers. Each question has specified word counts.
Before you watch the assigned documentary series, answer the following 2 questions:
- Brainstorm the term “Chronic Illness.” (Simply write words that come to mind; there is no word limit)
- What is your current knowledge of chronic illness? What types of chronic illness have you heard of or are familiar with? Do you know of someone who has a chronic illness? If so, please share about them (what is the relation of this person to you, what chronic illness do they struggle with, how does the illness impact their life, etc.). If you do not know of someone who has a chronic illness, please choose a chronic illness described in Ch. 11 of the textbook and write a summary. [100-word minimum. Please support your answer with a minimum of one citation from the textbook (for example: Alexander, p. 150)
- Now watch the short documentary series, “Trust Me, I’m Sick”. There are 4 episodes in total (the first is 13 min., the others are around 5-7 min.) After you watch each episode, write a response of a minimum of 150 words for each episode following the prompt: What did you learn? What resonated with you?
