After reading Chapter 20, students learned about developmentally appropriate elements of children’s books as well as the importance of storytelling. As stated in Chapter 20, there are elements in children’s book that should be considered prior to introducing and reading the book to children. Some elements that should be considered are age-appropriateness, time spent reading, book size, book texture, and book illustrations, just to name a few. After evaluating some developmentally appropriate elements of a book, the next step would be tell or read the story. Is there a method or technique to introduce a story to children? Well, there are actually many different methods such as using puppets to tell a story. More importantly, storytelling can teach children many concepts in relation to culture, language as well as social-emotional connectivity. Therefore, before teachers can introduce a book to children, they must do their homework to determine if the book is developmentally appropriate.
