LAPC Gender Roles in Society and Everyday Practices Discussion

  1. Think about at least two specific examples in which you perform your race and/or gender in everyday practices, consciously or unconsciously. Now think about at least one specific example in which you violate the expected norms of gender/race performances. What happens when you violate the norms of gender/race performance? In other words, consider ways that people might react when you behave differently than you are expected to behave based on your race/gender.
  2. I want you to consider how the power of texts has influenced our understanding of the world around us. For this discussion question, I want you to point out one silenced history. You should focus on a figure or event in U.S. history that is not typically discussed in mainstream U.S. history.  (Suggestions: Black Wallstreet, Ida B. Wells, Sojourner Truth, a different version of Malcolm X, Tuskegee Experiment, redlining, Chinese Exclusion Act, Marsha P. Johnson). Using at least one credible outside source, teach us about the figure/fact/concept and tell us why it is important that we are taught histories that encompass different voices in our education system?
