Essay 2: Poetry

Read this carefully.

PROMPT: Choose a poem from the text book and write an essay in which you analyze 2-3 of the poem’s literary elements (as we’ve discussed in class and seen on handouts, and use this analysis to interpret the meaning of the poem. Follow all of the directions below.

The Poem You Choose:

Your poem must come from our textbook.

Write the most thought provoking line in the poem (the one line that stands out—perhaps it is the last line(s) as an epigraph at the top of your first page; use italics.

In literature, an epigraph is a phrase, quotation, or poem that is set at the beginning of a document or component. The epigraph may serve as a preface, as a summary, or to link the work to a wider literary canon, either to invite comparison or to enlist a conventional context.

Use 2-3 poetic devices to show how the poet’s intentions have directed your understanding of the poem.

When discussing the location of the poem, remember to use poetic devices such as stanza, couplet, or quatrain, as we used in class. Line number works as well. When using a direct quote, always include quotation marks and use dashes (/) to show line breaks.

Your paper, like always, should be in MLA format. This means Times New Roman, 12 point font, double spaced, with an appropriate heading and page numbers. The entire essay should be 5-6 paragraphs.
