Part 1. Critical Reflections
First, read the magazine articles and news stories about SM Entertainment and its “Culture Technology” system,
paying close attention to how the press represents the backstory and rising ambitions of the company’s
globalization model. Try to get a sense of the logic and larger stakes underlying this narrative and offer some initial
reflections on the following questions:
1. How would you describe the image that SM Entertainment projects about itself and K-Pop more generally to the
world? In a sentence, what story does SM tell about itself through the press?
2. How does the company seem to approach the relationship between culture, technology, and globalization? Are
there particular aspects of this approach that strike you as either promising and/or disconcerting? If so, why?
3. What image and story about Korea do you see promoted by SM in the press? Are there particular aspects of this
approach that strike you as either promising and/or disconcerting? If so, why?
